Library Conduct

  • No smoking/smokeless tobacco, eating or drinking in the library building.  Please do not bring opened drinks or food items into the library.  You may bring your bottle of water as long as it remains closed.  The library has a water fountain near the fire exit door in the bound periodicals section.
  • Taking materials without checking them out is stealing.
  • All cadets must sign-in and sign-out at PMCQ.  Failure to sign in and out will result in the cadet receiving demerits.
  • The library is for studying, not socializing.  Please respect the needs of others.  Disruptive individuals will be asked to leave.
  • For cadets, the class C uniform or BDUs are worn in the library during daytime hours.  The class C (O) uniform may be worn at night.  Gym clothes are not permitted.
  • The computers in the library are to be used to conduct research.  They are not to be used to play games, engage in chat rooms/social networking sites, hacking or visiting sites that may be deemed inappropriate.  Do not change the settings on the computers -- this includes displays and icons.  Library computer use is a privilege that can be revoked.
  • Any type of cell phone use is prohibited in the library at all times.
  • Cadets are only permitted the use of classrooms and meeting rooms if there is a faculty or staff member present with them and if it is during the library's regular hours of operation.  At this time, we do not permit community use of our classrooms or meeting rooms.
  • Print-outs and copies are available for $0.10 per page.  Payment is required for all prints and copies.  If instruction is needed in the use of the copy machine or the print preview option, please contact a library staff member.
  • Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions:  The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Circulation Procedures

The books are shelved in open stacks so that patrons can serve themselves.  Books removed from shelves should not be re-shelved -- they should be left on tables or on the orange shelves.

Reference books and AV materials do not circulate to cadets or community members.

Reserve books and materials are housed in a staff-only area and must be requested from a staff member.  Reserve materials must be signed-out (yes, you must show ID) and must be used only in the main reading room.  These items do not circulate outside of the library and must be returned to a library staff member.  The last person signing for a reserve item will be held responsible for it.  Failure to return a reserve book or transferring the book to another cadet without signing it in on the blue card will result in a stick for FFI.

To open a library account, MMI and Judson students must show a valid ID card, provide a local mailing address, and provide an e-mail address.  Judson students must also provide a working phone number.  MMI and Judson students must present a valid ID card every time they check-out books.  All circulating materials must be scanned for check-out by a library staff member at the circulation desk.  A date slip in the back of the book will be stamped to indicate the due date.  Fines are charged for overdue books.

Community patrons must fill out a community patron application and agree to the rules stated there-in.

 Overdue Items and Fines

The cadet overdue fine for books is $0.10 per day.  The community patron fine for books is $1.00 per day.  Demerits will be issued to cadets who have items that are overdue.

Courtesy overdue notices are sent to patrons at their e-mail addresses.  Failure to receive an overdue notice from the library does not relieve the patron of her/his responsibility to return materials and pay accumulated fines.

 Computer Stations

The library has a total of twelve computer stations -- all have both Microsoft Office applications and Internet access.  Internet computers are provided for reference and research.  Printing and USB drives are fully functional.  Please sign the computer usage sheet located on the bookcase by the computers each time a library computer is used.  This enables the library to count users for circulation records.

Database Subscriptions

The state of Alabama and the library subscribe to several databases that are not available for free on the Internet.  These databases offer credible, quality research materials that are suitable for citation in academic papers.  Detailed guides on how to use these databases are available via the Alabama Virtual Library.  Personal instruction is also available, as time permits.
